The EY HireVue interview is a recorded digital interview that EY names openly in its own documents. EY publishes a HireVue privacy notice on ey.com describing a “Digital Interview and CodeVue Tool” used to assess candidates, and it runs a branded HireVue portal at ey.hirevue.com. EY’s interview tips page explains the two formats it uses: prerecorded video interviews, where candidates record responses to questions sent in advance, and live video interviews that act as a dialogue with a member of the EY team. The recorded version is the screening one. There is no interviewer, no follow up question, and no chance to read the room. EY’s stated interviewing style is behavioural, so almost every prompt asks you to describe a real situation from your own experience and what you personally did.
TL;DR
- EY does use HireVue. EY publishes a HireVue privacy notice on ey.com and runs digital interviews at ey.hirevue.com.
- EY says its digital interview tool assesses cognitive aptitude and processes your voice, image and video images, plus test results.
- EY runs two video formats: prerecorded (recorded alone) and live (a real dialogue with an EY interviewer).
- EY’s interviewing style is behavioural. It expects specific examples, not opinions about yourself.
- Some EY tracks ask for a video as part of the application itself, before any interview invitation.
- EY’s advice for application videos is blunt: do not script it.
Does EY use HireVue?
Yes, and EY says so itself rather than leaving it to candidate forums. The HireVue privacy notice on ey.com states that “all functions are used to help the recruiting process by using video or online interviewing software” and that the tool “enables EY to interview and assess you by replacing lengthy application forms or pre-screening questions”. The same notice lists what is processed: your name, email, your voice, your image, your video images, and test results showing your talents and cognitive abilities. EY also runs a live HireVue tenant, for example a “Global Student Exchange Digital Interviews” page that points candidates to the HireVue Candidate Help Center for technical problems.
What EY does not publish is a per country stage list naming the round. EY is a network of member firms and the sequence changes by region, service line and programme. Read your invitation email as the authority for your own process. For the platform mechanics behind any invitation, start with how HireVue works.
Where does the video sit in EY’s process?
EY’s global “how we hire” page describes three stages: discover and apply, prepare to interview and complete the assessment, then review the offer. It says candidates may face online, written or face to face assessments, alongside in person, phone and video interactions. EY Canada’s student page is more concrete and shows that a video can be part of the application package itself.
| Stage | What EY says happens |
|---|---|
| Search and apply | Application with resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript and a video |
| Video link | Candidates receive a link to complete the video after the first documents are submitted |
| EY review | Selection based on academic background, extracurriculars, and work or volunteer experience |
| Assessment | Online, written or face to face assessment, depending on the track |
| Interviews | One or more phone, video and in person conversations, prerecorded or live |
| Offer | A decision is usually made within a few weeks of the final interview |
Note the order carefully. If your track asks for the video at application stage, the recording is not a reward for passing a screen. It is part of the screen. Recording once under a real clock beforehand is the whole preparation: you can run three free timed HireVue prompts and watch the playback before you touch the real link.
How long is the EY digital interview?
EY does not publish per question timings, so treat any exact number you see elsewhere with suspicion. The published platform range is the safe planning assumption. Indeed describes a HireVue assessment interview as typically five to eight questions completed in under 20 minutes, with roughly 30 seconds to prepare and a fixed 90 seconds to three minutes to record each answer, depending on the question.
Plan for a 90 second answer with a clean ending. If the timer allows more, you have space. If it allows less, you are still inside it. Running out of time mid sentence is the most common self inflicted failure in this format.
What questions does EY ask?
EY tells you the style directly. Its interview tips page says: “We lean heavily on a type of interviewing called behavioral interviewing. It’s based on the premise that past behavior predicts future behavior, and it focuses on knowledge, skills and abilities, backed by specific examples.” EY also says its open ended questions begin with phrases like “Give an example of” or “Describe a situation when”.
So expect prompts in these families:
- Give an example of a time you worked in a team that disagreed.
- Describe a situation when you had to learn something technical quickly.
- Tell us about a time you spotted an error nobody else had noticed.
- Describe a time you handled competing deadlines.
- Why EY, and why this service line.
- What does building a better working world mean to you in practice.
Four or five well built stories will cover almost all of them. For a wider bank of prompts to rehearse against, see common HireVue interview questions.
What does a strong EY answer sound like?
Both answers below are structured with STAR and land inside a two minute recording window at normal speaking pace.
Question: describe a situation when you found an error that others had missed.
“During a summer placement at a mid sized accounting firm I was assigned to check supplier invoices against the purchase ledger for a client’s year end. The task was mechanical, and I had roughly 400 lines to reconcile in three days. On the second day I noticed the same supplier appearing twice with different reference formats, once with a hyphen and once without. My task was only to flag mismatches, but a duplicate would not show as a mismatch at all, so I built a quick check that stripped punctuation from the reference field before comparing. That surfaced eleven duplicated entries worth a material amount for a client of that size. I wrote it up in one page for my supervisor rather than fixing anything myself, because the client owned the correction. She raised it with the client, the entries were reversed, and the punctuation check became part of the team’s standard first pass. The lesson I keep is that mechanical tasks are where assumptions hide, and the cheapest place to test one is early.”
Why it works: it names a concrete method, it respects the boundary of the candidate’s own authority, and the result changed how the team worked afterwards.
Question: why EY?
“I chose EY for the mix of assurance rigour and the technology side sitting in the same firm. My degree is accounting and finance, but the part I enjoyed most was a data module where we audited a transaction file for anomalies rather than balancing it by hand. That is the direction the work is going, and EY is one of the few places where I can qualify professionally and still be near data work rather than choosing one. I spoke to two people in the assurance practice at an on campus event. Both said their first year involved rotating across three or four client engagements, which matters to me because I do not yet know which sector I want. I also read EY’s own description of behavioural interviewing before applying, and I liked that the process asks what I have actually done rather than how I describe myself. To be honest, I applied to two firms only, so this is a narrow and deliberate choice rather than volume applying.”
Why it works: it links a real preference to a real feature of the firm, uses evidence from a conversation, and closes with something verifiable about the candidate’s own behaviour.
What is EY assessing in the recording?
EY’s privacy notice is the honest source here. It says the digital interview and CodeVue tool assesses cognitive aptitude abilities, and that it processes voice, image and video images along with test results about abilities and personality. It does not describe the underlying scoring mechanism, and no public EY document states whether a human, an algorithm, or both review your recording.
That gap is not a reason to guess. Answer the question asked, use one situation per answer, speak in the first person about what you did, and finish with a result. If you want the evidence based view of what is known about review and scoring across employers, see HireVue retakes, results and scoring.
How should you record it?
EY gives one specific piece of advice for its application video: show your true self and do not script the video, because natural and casual is the way to go. That is not permission to wing it. It means learn the shape of your story, not the sentences.
Practical rules that follow from that:
- Learn a five point spine per story, not a paragraph. Reading kills eye contact.
- Look at the camera lens, not at your own thumbnail image.
- Light your face from the front and keep the lens at eye level.
- Say the result out loud in your last sentence, before the timer ends.
- Record one full rehearsal under the real clock. Watch it once. Fix one thing.
The STAR method for HireVue answers gives you the five point spine. If your invitation turns out to be a live call rather than a recording, the differences are covered in HireVue vs a live interview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the EY video interview prerecorded or live?
EY uses both. Its interview tips page says video interviews “can be prerecorded video interviews, in which candidates record responses to questions sent in advance, or live video interviews that act as a dialogue with a member of the EY team”. Your invitation email will say which one you have.
Does EY ask for a video before any interview?
In some tracks, yes. EY Canada’s student page describes an application package of resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript and video, with the video link sent after the first three documents are submitted.
Does EY use coding tests on HireVue?
EY’s own privacy notice names a “Digital Interview and CodeVue Tool”. CodeVue is HireVue’s coding assessment product, so technology tracks may include a coding element. EY does not publish which roles receive it.
How many questions are in the EY HireVue interview?
EY does not publish a number. The general platform range reported by Indeed is five to eight questions completed in under 20 minutes.
How long does EY take to decide?
EY Canada says a decision is usually made within a few weeks of the final interview. It does not publish a turnaround time for the recorded round specifically.
