The Goldman Sachs HireVue interview is a one-way recorded video round that sits between your application and the Superday. Nobody is on the call. A prompt appears, you get a short prep window (commonly about 30 seconds), then the camera records your answer against a timer. Candidate reports and prep publishers describe roughly 3 to 6 questions and a total sitting of about 30 minutes. Most prompts are behavioural or motivational: why Goldman, why this division, a time you handled a difficulty. Some divisions add one light role-related question. Corporate Finance Institute names Goldman Sachs among the banks that use the HireVue platform, and university career centres list it alongside J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley. Goldman does not publish the vendor name on its own careers pages, so treat the exact question count as a range, not a promise.

TL;DR

  • Expect about 3 to 6 prompts, roughly 30 seconds of prep, and 1 to 3 minutes of recording per answer.
  • Most questions are behavioural and motivational. Technical depth is saved for the Superday.
  • Career Principles reports one recorded attempt per question at Goldman, and no pausing once recording starts.
  • HireVue removed facial analysis from its assessments in March 2020 and announced it in January 2021, so stop worrying about micro-expressions.
  • Engineering candidates usually meet a HackerRank coding test before or around the video round.
  • The killer is a generic “why Goldman”. Name a desk, a deal, or a person you spoke to.

Where does the HireVue sit in the Goldman Sachs process?

The video round is an early filter. GraduatesFirst maps the graduate path as online application, then online assessments, then the HireVue video interview, then the Superday assessment centre with 2 to 5 live rounds.

Stage What it is Typical shape
Online application Form, CV, motivation questions Submitted on the Goldman careers portal
Online assessments Numerical and verbal reasoning; HackerRank for engineering Numerical about 20 questions in 20 minutes; HackerRank 2 to 4 problems
HireVue video interview One-way recorded answers About 3 to 6 questions, roughly 30 minutes total
Superday Live interviews, sometimes case or brainteaser 2 to 5 rounds
Offer Decision and feedback Days to weeks after the Superday

What questions does Goldman Sachs ask on HireVue?

The prompts skew behavioural and motivational. Reported examples include why you want to work for Goldman Sachs, a time you overcame a difficulty, and scenario questions with an ethics edge. Divisional prompts appear too: why this division rather than the one next door.

Group your preparation into five buckets and you will cover nearly everything:

  1. Motivation: why Goldman, why this division, why now.
  2. Teamwork and conflict: a disagreement you resolved.
  3. Failure and learning: a real mistake, not a humblebrag.
  4. Leadership and initiative: something you started.
  5. Commercial awareness: a market event and why it matters.

Our wider list of prompts across employers lives in HireVue interview questions, and the structure to hang them on is in HireVue STAR method answers.

How long do you get to answer at Goldman Sachs?

Reported timings cluster around 30 seconds of preparation and 1 to 3 minutes of recording. Wesleyan’s career centre describes the general HireVue pattern as 3 to 7 questions with a prep window near 30 seconds and a response limit of 60 seconds to 3 minutes.

Aim for 90 to 110 seconds of real content. Under 45 seconds reads as thin. Running into the wall at 3 minutes reads as unstructured. Practice landing the point before the bar turns red. The mechanics of the platform, including the practice question and the countdown, are covered in how does HireVue work.

Sample answer: why Goldman Sachs?

“I want to work in a bank where the analyst is close to the decision, and Goldman’s classic sector coverage model puts juniors in the room earlier than most. I spoke to two analysts in the London TMT group in March. Both described the same thing: they were building the model that partners argued over the next morning, not repackaging someone else’s output. That is the apprenticeship I want.

Second, the client mix. I followed the software carve-out wave over the last two years, and Goldman kept showing up as adviser on the complicated ones, where the separation of a division is harder than the price. I want to learn on transactions where the structuring is the hard part.

Third, and honestly, the people filter. I did a spring week at a smaller bank and enjoyed the work, but the team was thin, so learning was ad hoc. I want a training programme with a spine and a peer group that pushes me.

So: proximity to the decision, deals where structure matters, and a real apprenticeship. That combination is why I applied here first.”

Why it works: three specific reasons, one piece of first-hand evidence, no adjectives about prestige.

Sample answer: tell me about a time you overcame a difficulty

“In my second year I ran the finance side of our 400-member student union society. Three weeks before our biggest event, our main sponsor pulled out. That was about 60 percent of the budget, and 280 tickets were already sold.

My task was to either fund the gap or cancel without wrecking our reputation. I did three things. First, I rebuilt the budget line by line and found that the venue and catering were 70 percent of the cost, so those were the only levers that mattered. Second, I renegotiated the venue down by moving us from a Saturday to a Thursday, which the venue wanted anyway. Third, I split the sponsor gap across four smaller local firms instead of chasing one replacement, because four small yeses were faster than one big one.

We ran the event on the new date. We covered the shortfall with about 200 pounds spare, and two of the four sponsors came back the following year.

What I took from it: when a number moves against you, find the two lines that actually drive the total before you start making calls.”

Why it works: one clear situation, a decision rule, a result with a number the speaker actually owns.

Does Goldman Sachs use AI to score your HireVue?

HireVue’s assessments no longer look at your face. The company removed visual analysis in March 2020 and announced the change publicly in January 2021, saying language had become the stronger predictor and that the visual component was not adding enough to justify the concern it caused. What remains is language and delivery, plus human review of the shortlisted recordings. Career Principles reports Goldman recordings being watched by analysts rather than left purely to an algorithm.

Practical consequence: your words carry the score, not your smile. Speak in clean sentences and signpost your structure out loud. More on scoring and what happens after you submit is in HireVue retakes, results and scoring.

What do people get wrong?

  • Reading a script. It is audible, and it flattens delivery.
  • One story reused for four prompts. Prepare six distinct stories.
  • Answering “why Goldman” with things true of every bank.
  • Bad audio. Fix the room before you fix the answer, using the HireVue setup and technical checklist.
  • Filling the full three minutes because it is there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in the Goldman Sachs HireVue?

Reports cluster at 3 to 6 questions, with the whole sitting around 30 minutes. The count varies by division and by year.

Can you retake a question?

Career Principles reports one recorded attempt per question at Goldman, with no pausing once recording begins. Other employers differ, so read the on-screen instructions before you press record.

Are the questions technical?

Mostly not. Expect behavioural and motivational prompts, with occasional light role-related questions. Deep technicals belong to the Superday.

How long until you hear back?

Reported waits range from about one week to a month depending on division and location. Silence in week two is normal, not a rejection.

Do you need a suit?

Dress as you would for a live interview at that firm. Business dress is the safe default for a bank.

Is there a game-based assessment too?

Goldman’s graduate assessments are usually reasoning tests, and engineering candidates get HackerRank. Game-style batteries are more common at other employers, covered in the HireVue game-based assessment guide.
